I don’t follow government guidelines when it comes to nutrition because I passionately care about my health. So imagine my surprise seeing the FDA’s recent update on what foods can be labeled as ‘healthy’ is actually legit! It’s not 100% solid, but it’s a huge improvement.

Not sure what took so long for them to make these changes as true health foods have never changed. Foods that were nutrient dense and optimal for humans to eat are the same now as they were thousands of years ago. I’m inclined to think that people at the FDA are looking to save their jobs before the MAHA crew comes in to clean house. Whatever the reason, I’m happy for this change. For years I’ve been doing my part in voting with my dollars and choosing to eat real food found in nature rather than made up food created in factories, but the standards set by the government impacts the food served in hospitals and in schools. I’m a school teacher so this is something that is important to me because so many children are starting out their early years eating processed garbage first thing in the morning. The USDA is the agency that funds school food. I don’t know what the connection is between the FDA and USDA, but I’m sure they share information so maybe they’ll be the next one to declare and implement changes because they’re feeding children the most unhealthy food possible simply because the foods are fortified with specific nutrients that meet the ‘healthy’ criteria.

Under the FDA’s previous definition of healthy, processed foods were classified as healthy despite artificial ingredients and added sugars simply because they contain added vitamins/nutrients. Under the new standard, foods that contain those nutrients naturally are what is considered healthy. As it should be. Limits on dietary cholesterol were removed so eggs are back on the table (they never left mine!) 😉

In celebration, here are some egg appreciation photos!
