Typically my husband and I stock up on frozen fish at Whole Foods like mahi and wild sockeye salmon. Well apparently my husband threw in a bag of frozen monkfish. I saw it defrosting in the refrigerator the other night and thought it was mahi since it was white.
We ate the fish last night and this morning I texted my husband inquiring the name of the fish we ate since I was unfamiliar with it. Turns out that monkfish are FREAKY looking creatures::
I still can’t believe I ate that lol
I was exhausted last night and laid on the couch as David was in the kitchen throwing around dinner ideas and insisting that I join him in dinner prep. Nope. I stayed on the couch. I suggested that we bust out the frozen Against The Grain pizza (pure laziness). But he had the fish defrosting and he said that monkfish is a good fish for frying or turning into nuggets.
Fried fish is something I hadn’t eaten in years and since there seems to be a primal alternative for everything that isn’t primal, I Googled “primal fried fish” or “primal breaded fish.” Naturally the result titled “Battered Fish” caught my eye and sure enough, a simple recipe for primal batter exists!!
Battered Fish–Welcome back fish & chips and fish sticks!
The recipe calls for egg whites, tapioca flour and salt. As I shouted the recipe from the couch I didn’t say egg whites because I didn’t want to make the batter making process difficult (didn’t want to deter David from wanting to cook this….he isn’t one to go out of his way for a primalized non-primal meal. Before me there was no zucchini noodles or eggplant lasagna or grain-free pizza, cookies and cake in his life. PLUS, I figured that the batter would be much tastier with the yolks.
And here it is! Fried in lard and served with a salad. It was incredible!! I can’t believe we had primal fried fish.
After dinner I mustered the energy to clean the kitchen before falling asleep an hour and a half later. I slept for 9-10 hours straight! Eating and sleeping– my top two favorite activities lol
